A top class cylinder for the world class National Library of Scotland

McDonald Engineers can now claim their POWERflow unvented cylinder is in a national institution following a recent project which saw one if its commercial grade cylinders being installed in the National Library of Scotland.

The POWERflow was installed as part of a routine maintenance programme and due to the height of the building, Scotland’s largest library required a 4 bar working pressure copper cylinder manufactured to their exact specification.

McDonald Engineers’ answer was to produce a commercial grade POWERflow with customised connections, to provide a higher flow rate than standard cylinders. McDonalds also amended their standard design to simplify the installation process, by positioning the connections in convenient and easily accessible locations.

Jamie Stewart, McDonald Engineers Sales Director explained why many commercial contracts were insisting on bespoke copper cylinders, “The benefits of copper in terms of its increased thermal transfer and its bacteria killing properties are well documented, however our ability to manufacture bespoke cylinders to exact specifications means that clients and architects do not need to compromise on what they require.”

He continued, “By increasing the connection sizes and upgrading the copper thickness, we can enhance working pressures to meet the demands of the project. And if you are creating a bespoke cylinder you can also look to minimise the installation time and costs by positioning connections in the perfect location.”

McDonald Engineers has demonstrated its expertise in the hotel and leisure sector by installing its POWERflow commercial cylinders in Edinburgh’s newest hotel.

Situated in the Bruntsfield area of the city, The Links Hotel, has just undergone a major refurbishment spending in excess of £1million pounds with all 22 of the rooms undergoing a complete transformation.

And with such a large investment, owners Kingdom Hotels were determined to install a quality hot water system that would meet its exemplary standard of quality.

Copper’s thermal conductivity, which is almost 30 times greater than that of Stainless Steel enabling  it to heat water to higher temperatures in a far shorter period of time. Add in its superior bacteria killing properties and its easy to see why copper is fast becoming the material of choice in the hotel industry.

McDonald Engineers’ Sales Director, Jamie Stewart, explained, “One of the biggest problems that hotels face is a lack of pressure and a drop in temperature when there is high occupancy levels, particularly at peak times.”

POWERflow’s ability to deliver mains pressure with superb heat recovery rates coupled with its reliability ensures peak performance, no matter what demands are placed upon it.

“We are delighted to have provided the management team at the Links hotel with the confidence and peace of mind that their guests won’t have to endure a cold or weak shower in the morning!”
