Hospitals Turn to Copper’s Health Properties to Reduce Spread of Infections
McDonald Engineers has welcomed news that an Irish hospital will be the first in the world to use copper door handles to reduce infections associated with the healthcare industry, such as MRSA. This further promotes the superior health and hygienic properties of copper.
The announcement follows on from the highly successful trials carried out at Selly Oak hospital in Birmingham. These demonstrated the use of copper surfaces, such as taps, toilet seats and door push plates, can reduce microbial contamination by 90-100%.
As one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of copper cylinders, McDonald Engineers has been promoting the superior hygienic properties of its copper hot water cylinders and calorifiers in all sectors. There has been a growing usage in the healthcare and education sectors thanks to the increased awareness of copper’s bacteria killing properties.
Tests on copper surfaces show that over 99.9% of specific bacteria (including the MRSA superbug) are killed within just 2 hours. It is no wonder than many healthcare architects and specifiers are looking towards copper as the material of choice for hot water cylinders, in the many refurbishment projects planned for NHS Trusts throughout 2010.

I’ve been telling people that copper is good for killing some bugs for years now, especially when people have asked me to remove the copper water mains and ask me to replace it with plastic! I’ve often advised the customer to stop wasting their money unless there is a medical reason for this action. It’s funny because most people believe that copper is poisonous. I can remember one customer asking me a question, “The water pipe coming into my building. It’s made of copper and will I die from copper poisoning?” This one always makes me lol. Well I can remember saying something like,” depends on how much copper you intend on eat or drink…being sarcastic… said with a smile on my face! It’s amazing what a customer will read in a magazine and then believe it.
What about copper bracelets that had been used on a person’s skin for years? Once again copper has been used for its healing properties…Copper have been used for thousands of years.
Ask yourself this question… how many people die of drinking too much alcohol also the damage it does to a person’s body. Now compare drinking water from a copper pipe!
Now if you were having a conversation about lead pipes…well that would be a different story!
How many plumbers do you hear of dying from copper poisoning…on TV, newspapers and magazines each year. I’m thinking back from when I was a kid…wow that a long way back in time. Nope I can remember any. Not to say there won’t be one! Just hope it not me…lol
I can remember hearing about people dying from lead poisoning when I was a kid but never from copper.
