McDonald Engineers See Rise in Demand for Back Boilers
McDonald Engineers has reported an increase in demand in its copper back boilers as a result in the growth in wood burning stove market and the tendency of restoring and installing the original coal fireplace in the UK’s homes.
Coal and wood are becoming a cost effective solution for helping heat properties. There has been a significant increase in not only fireplaces but also solid fuel stoves, which can also be linked to McDonald Engineers THERMflow Thermal Storage unit to provide hot water and heating.
The company has been one of the UK’s market leaders in copper manufacturing since 1946 and is at the forefront of copper cylinders for the renewable energy market thanks to its unrivalled ability to produce bespoke units.
Manufactured from a minimum of 4mm copper for maximum durability, McDonald Engineers has carved out a real niche in the market place with its ability to supply not only common block boilers, but also more complicated items such as Junior Quick Heat and Arch Flue Back Boilers.
McDonald Engineers’ Sales Director, Jamie Stewart, explained, “We have continued to sell replacement back boilers on a fairly regular basis over the last 20 years or so, however the last 12 months has seen a significant rise in demand.”

McDonald Engineers Launch New THERMflow Brochure
McDonald Engineers have launched a new brochure to support the changing market demands of market leading thermal store, THERMflow.
Thermal stores are becoming an increasingly popular solution for hot water cylinders, not only because of its ability to deliver mains pressure hot water with limited maintenance implications, but also its ability to handle multi-fuel and renewable energy installations.
Add in the superior heat transfer and bacteria killing properties offered by copper together with McDonald Engineers world class service, and it’s easy to see why the THERMflow is becoming one of the most successful Thermal Stores on the market today.
McDonald Engineers’ Sales Director, Jamie Stewart, explained “The increase in energy costs has quite literally fuelled the demand for alternative heat solutions such as solar, heat pumps and wood burning stoves. And as people look to maximise the efficiency of their heating systems, they are exploring every means of recovering any heat available”
He continued, “Our experience in multi-fuel installations is widely respected in the market and our clients have come to rely on the advice and expertise provided by our technical sales team to deliver the most effective and efficient solution possible.”
The THERMflow system is available in a wide range of sizes however McDonald’s custom designed service enables clients to tailor the cylinder to their exact requirements with multiple coils, positioning of connections and sizing.

McDonald Engineers Specification Success for Happy New Year
Filed under: Electric Wet Central Heating System, Thermal Store, Unvented Cylinder, heat pump cylinder
Proving that McDonald Engineers provide their clients with more than just high quality hot water systems, the copper cylinder manufacturer is already looking forward to enjoying a happy new year with several major specification successes.
McDonald Engineers have already secured specification status for a number of local authority and housing association projects across the country for their combination cylinders, POWERflow 2000, THERMflow and ELECTRAflow. In addition, the renewable ready range which now features the ECOflow unvented, is proving to be extremely popular.
Jamie Stewart, Sales Director of McDonald Engineers concludes “Although we are competitive with our prices, we know that the costs of our goods alone do not win contracts. Councils and Housing Associations must demonstrate that they are achieving best value for money, however that also takes into consideration the quality of the product and the level of service and support offered by suppliers.”
McDonald Engineers has been working hard with key decision makers, design teams and installation contractors to develop cylinder solutions that meet the exact requirements for individual projects. More clients are recognising that an off the shelf product often doesn’t suit the situation and developing a solution that is tweaked to suit the exact needs can prove to be more economical.
A recent example of this was on a job for a Scottish Housing association. McDonald Engineers worked with the heating contractor to redesign the placement of several connections. This made the installation within a tight space significantly easier as well as achieving substantial time and therefore cost savings.
In response to being asked what makes McDonald Engineers level of service superior, Jamie, stated “It’s about our commitment and flexibility. We are genuinely committed to ensuring that our clients receive the best customer service prior and post purchase. If a client requires a quick off the shelf solution, we’ll have it in stock. If they require a bespoke cylinder or we feel there is the opportunity to make savings, we will work closely with them to design the best possible solution.”
And it’s not just the design side where McDonald Engineers are making inroads. Recognising the importance of enabling installers to adapt to changing technologies such as heat pumps and solar energy, McDonald Engineers are one of the few hot water cylinder manufacturers to offer advanced training courses for renewable energy cylinders.

McDonald Engineers’ French Connection for Thermal Store

Thermal Stores from McDonald Engineers
McDonald Engineers have demonstrated their superior service and their competitive pricing by securing the contract to manufacture and ship one of their THERMflow thermal stores to France for a key client.
With a growing reputation for being the company to turn to for a quick turnaround on hot water cylinders, McDonald Engineers were able to help a client who enquired on a Thursday about the possibility of having a 210 litre cased THERMflow manufactured and despatched on the Monday to a project in France.
With their HQ based in Scotland, this could have been seen by many manufacturers as mission impossible, however, not ones for letting their clients down, McDonald Engineers said “Mais Oui and initiated their fast track manufacturing process.”
“We are proud to have a highly efficient manufacturing process and highly committed team which meant the order was despatched on time, despite the extremely short time frame” said sales director, Jamie Stewart.
He continued, “However, we believe that there will always be room for improvement and we are delighted that our knowledge transfer partnership with Strathclyde University which looks at process improvement and new product development is already paying dividends.”

McDonald Engineers’ Custom Cylinders Save Money on Large Thermal Store Contract
Filed under: Copper Cylinder, Thermal Store, hot water cylinder

THERMflow Thermal Stores from McDonald Engineers
Dispelling the myth that bespoke cylinders are just for one-off projects, McDonald Engineers has enabled one Scottish Local Authority to save a significant amount of time and installation costs on a project which required over 400 thermal stores.
By working closely with the project team, McDonald Engineers were able to re- position several key connections on its standard THERMflow Thermal Store, to suit the incoming pipework and make it easier for the installation team to access.
In doing so, the installation team were able to install the cylinders much quicker and with less materials, saving time, money and hassle on site.
McDonald Engineers’ Sales Director, Jamie Stewart, explained, “Our flexible manufacturing process is renowned for being able to produce one off cylinders quickly and efficiently. However there is a growing client base, who now realise the enormous benefits that can be achieved just by tweaking the design of existing products for large volume contracts.”
He continued, “By making simple changes, such as repositioning the connections, clients can achieve significant time and material savings. When you add up all the savings, whether it is on a contract of 20 homes or 20,000 cylinder installations, it’s easy to see how much can be saved.”
