McDonald Engineers’ MD Embarks on Mt. Kilimanjaro Charity Challenge

McDonald Engineers’ Managing Director, Bill Stewart, has set off on an extraordinary challenge to scale Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, and raise £20,000 for charity in the process.

Bill together with his wife Mairead, will join a team from the Rotary Club of Kirkcaldy as they take on the challenge of a lifetime to raise funds for projects in Tanzania that the Rotary has been supporting.

Bill, more renowned for his love of cars as opposed to hill walking, explained,” Not being natural mountaineers we have been in training to raise our fitness for the event, though we are aware the threat of altitude sickness will be the biggest challenge.

He continued “We would like our effort to do more good than just allow us to bore our friends with stories about how long Mairead couldn’t wash her hair for or how sore my feet were.”

You can help Bill to achieve his £20,000 target and provide him with the extra motivation he requires to conquer the mountain by donating now at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/charities/rotaryclubofkirkcaldycharitabletrust

As many firms looks to wind down for the summer period, McDonald Engineers is gearing up for one of its busiest periods of the year for commercial calorifiers, as schools across the UK begin their maintenance programmes during the school holidays.

The rigorous demands placed on a school’s hot water system demands a high capacity calorifier that is both reliable and efficient. However, add in the heightened awareness of potential health issues in the public sector and copper calorifiers are becoming the perfect solution.

As one of the leading manufacturers of copper hot water cylinders, McDonald Engineers is supplying over 20 schools across the UK with calorifiers ranging from 400 to 2000 litres.

McDonald Engineers’ Sales Director, Jamie Stewart, explained “The summer shut down is the only time these types of fairly major maintenance programmes can be carried out and we are delighted to have a reputation in the market for delivering durable, high quality units made exactly to a client’s specification for quick and trouble free installations.”

He continued, “Thanks to copper’s superior bacteria killing property which dramatically reduces the threat of Ecoli and Legionella, more and more schools are insisting on using copper calorifiers to protect their staff and students.”

McDonald Engineers are delighted to report that following their inspection audit by SEPA, they were once again found to have zero Non-Conformities and reinforce its position as one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of hot water cylinders.

Responsible for protecting and improving Scotland’s unique and beautiful environment, SEPA conduct visits every six months to ensure that McDonald Engineers are following the correct procedures as laid out in its guidelines.

Commenting on the report, Production Manager Brian Patrick said “We are delighted to have received a first class report from SEPA. McDonald Engineers Launch Nothing Hotter Than Copper Campaign

McDonald Engineers has unveiled its “nothing hotter than copper campaign” to promote the advantages available from using copper cylinders in comparison to other materials such as stainless steel.

As part of the campaign, McDonald Engineers, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of copper hot water cylinders, has produced a report which highlights the superior performance offered by copper cylinders.

The report details the fact that copper has a thermal conductivity which is 30 times greater than that of stainless steel and material properties which dramatically reduces the time required to heat the water in the cylinder and so the long term running costs.

It also illustrates copper’s superior bacteria killing properties which are a key factor when used in conjunction with renewable energy sources that can tend to generate a little less heat that traditional fuel sources.

McDonald Engineers, Managing Director, Bill Stewart, explained “Copper has been a key material for centuries however its natural properties make it anything but outdated in terms of the performance benefits it can bring to even the most sophisticated construction projection.”

He continued, “We are determined to make everyone involved in the construction process from architects and specifiers, through to contractors and installers and indeed end clients, understand the impact that this one material can have on reducing long term running costs and reducing the risk of bacteria and infection.”

McDonald Engineers were delighted to welcome a team from one of the UK’s leading plumbers merchants, who were treated to a full factory tour and product development presentation.

The factory tours are not only a great way to develop product knowledge, from the latest Heat Pump Cylinder technology to Calorifiers and Thermal Stores, they also allow customers the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the production process and the quality standards that are put in place.

After lunch, the visiting group then took the opportunity to hold a company sales meeting using the McDonald Engineers boardroom facilities, to complete what was seen as a very productive day.

Sales Director, Jamie Stewart said “Our factory tours are a great way for our clients to get to know our sales team and our products better. However the real value for many visitors is that they are able to see first hand how the cylinders are manufactured and fully understand what makes our cylinders so special.”

In partnership with Strathclyde University

McDonald Engineers, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of copper hot water cylinders, has embarked upon a two year KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) with Strathclyde University as the company looks to enhance its position in the energy market.

The partnership will enable McDonald Engineers to call upon the extensive knowledge and practical industry experience of the University’s team and in return will offer its insight into the commercial pressures that are prevalent in the construction and energy markets.

The company has joined forces with the university’s Advanced Forming Research Centre to initially examine ways in which McDonald Engineers can streamline its production facility. And whilst one aim of the project is to improve quality and lead times in the company’s production facility, a key outcome will be the launch of an exciting new product which will open up new doors for McDonald Engineers.

Managing Director of McDonald Engineers, Bill Stewart, explained, “We have a long and proud history as one of the leading manufacturers of superior quality hot water cylinders. Our partnership with Strathclyde University enables us to tap into an incredible resource that allows us access to techniques and strategies from some of the top companies in the world.”

Bill continued, “This is a tremendously exciting period for the company as we look to build on over 65 years of success as a family owned and managed business. I have no doubt this partnership will ensure our success continues for many generations to come.”

The partnership will be led by Graham Smyth, who has been appointed as KTP Associate to project manage the venture and will be based at McDonald Engineers’ Glenrothes headquarters. Graham has joined McDonald Engineers after spending 2 successful years as a Design Engineer in the Irish quarry industry.

Graham said, “One of McDonald Engineers’ key strengths is the passion every member of the team has for delivering a quality product and a world class service. Their willingness to embrace new ideas and tackle challenges head on is exactly what is needed when you take on a project like this and I am delighted to be involved.”
